Welcome back to campus

This week is one of the most special times of the year at Michigan State beginning with today as the day that thousands of new and returning Spartans arrive on campus. I look forward to riding around campus this morning, meeting students and their families, helping unload their cars and moving students into their home away from home.

Tuesday I had the pleasure of welcoming new faculty during their orientation. This is the largest group of new faculty coming into the university in many years, maybe ever, as part of our commitment to enhancing the student experience by reducing the student/faculty ratio and continuing to recruit cutting-edge researchers. This outstanding group of teachers and scholars is eager to work with students and new colleagues here at MSU.

On Thursday morning, I, along with Provost Wilcox and other academic leaders, will welcome first-year students to MSU and introduce them to the values and standards that make MSU such a special learning environment. The welcome ceremony will also feature Jeannette Walls, author of The Glass Castle, the book featured in our “One Book, One Community” reading program. The program reflects our commitment to building stronger ties with our East Lansing neighbors.

And I hope to see everyone at the stadium at 6:30 p.m. Thursday for Spartan Spirit. Our emcees will be alumna and WLNS anchor Sheri Jones and MSU senior and Student Alumni Foundation Co-Director Frankie Orlando. Many of our athletic coaches will be on hand, and of course, with the help of the Spartan Marching Band and MSU’s cheerleaders and dance teams, anyone new to the MSU family can learn the words to the fight song.

I also want to add that I am very proud of all who are playing a part in making Welcome Week a great time on campus. So many staff, students, faculty and volunteers are being wonderfully helpful and cooperative in getting our students and new faculty situated on campus. Thanks to all of you on Team MSU.

So I welcome all of you back to campus: staff, new and returning faculty, new and returning students, parents and friends. I hope that you will check back here often to find out what’s on my mind through blog entries and podcasts. But just as important, it’s a way for you to let me know what’s on your mind. Welcome to Team MSU.
