Campaign for MSU a resounding success

Today’s announcement of the results of the Campaign for MSU marks an important time in Michigan State University’s history. The campaign raised a total of more than $1.4 billion, significantly exceeding the goal of $1.2 billion, substantially growing our endowment, and ensuring our continued excellence today and well into the future. I am very proud of this accomplishment and of the members of Team MSU who made it all possible.

The plan was bold and visionary; the volunteers were passionate and dedicated; and the donors were enormously generous. We surpassed every goal we set—the total campaign goal, planned giving, and endowments—highlighting the capacity we have to reach and exceed any objective we set for ourselves. The funds will help secure the future for the next generation of Spartans and position MSU to meet the global challenges of the twenty-first century.

Increasing our endowment was a key focus of the campaign. We exceeded our goal with $476.1 million raised, resulting in the establishment of more than 1,500 new endowments. Endowments are important because they ensure that funding for faculty and student needs will continue in perpetuity. When we started the campaign, MSU ranked at the bottom of the Big Ten in endowment size with a net value of $488 million. Coupled with exceptional investment management by the Office of Investments & Financial Management, the generosity of donors has resulted in MSU’s net endowment reaching $1.631 billion.

The Campaign for MSU, publicly launched by the Board of Trustees in 2002, was the most ambitious fundraising campaign MSU has ever undertaken and the response was extraordinary. MSU alumni, friends, faculty, staff, and retirees showed their commitment to the mission and values of this great institution by pledging their support in both large and small ways. Throughout the campaign we connected with alumni all over the world and with non-alumni supporters who believe in what we are doing here at MSU to make the world a better place. Every gift helped MSU reach its goal.

These private contributions will fund scholarships and fellowships, building renovations and new construction, key faculty positions, and programmatic support. The success of this campaign would not have been possible without thousands of gifts from thousands of donors, including faculty, staff, and retirees of MSU, whose combined gifts totaled more than $85 million, or 6 percent of the total funds raised during the campaign.

On behalf of Team MSU, I thank all those who participated in the Campaign for MSU for their support of this campaign and for their commitment to advancing knowledge and transforming lives. Behind us is a great university; ahead of us is an even greater one.
