Summer Activities Attract Visitors to Campus

With the onset of summer, the campus transforms to make way for the sudden concentration of youth and visitors being exposed to our campus for the first time. Whether it’s the school field trip or participation in one of the many summer camps or competitions, we extend a warm, heart-felt welcome to our visitors.

In the strong tradition of international outreach and engagement, MSU will serve as the host site for the Odyssey of the Mind International Competition, May 23-26. Odyssey of the Mind provides opportunities for K-16 students to develop problem-solving, creative and critical-thinking skills in a competitive environment. More than 8,000 student competitors, coaches and judges will be joined by nearly 8,000 spectators on our campus.

Throughout the summer, we have more than 240 camps, conferences and seminars scheduled and expect over 50,000 visitors associated with the formal programs. For a complete listing of opportunities, visit the Spartan Youth Programs Web site at The events are for a variety of age groups and cover topics as diverse as agriculture, the arts and humanities, business, math, science, social studies, computers, engineering, environment, leadership skills and college preparation, along with many sports and fitness opportunities. Once again MSU will be the site for 4-H Exploration days, which provide opportunities for personal development.

A number of opportunities are available for adults as well. We are particularly excited about Grandparents University, which is back by popular demand. This program creates an inter-generational experience between grandparent and grandchild (ages 8-12). They live in the residence halls (dorms), attend classes and experience the highlights of our campus. In its second year, this program has doubled in size and is sold out with 500 participants expected.

This is a very special time for our student participants, schools, grandparents and families. With the beauty of campus at its fullest and the extraordinary spirit of Team MSU, I know the events at Michigan State will be memorable for all our guests.
