Improving regional children’s health services

Within any community, children’s health care is a fundamental need. Within the Lansing regional area, Michigan State University and Sparrow Health System offer a comprehensive array of services. Yet, we have long recognized that our efforts could be more beneficial to children and their families with better integration and coordination.

Today, I joined Sparrow Health System President and CEO Dennis Swan and others to announce a more complete approach to jointly offering specialty pediatric care in the Greater Lansing community. You can read more in the news release here. I’ve also recorded a video blog, which appears below, to offer more of my thoughts on what this partnership means for this region.

Our main goal is to enhance the coordination of care. We’ll do this by colocating clinics, establishing a joint call center to help families and physicians navigate and coordinate specialty referrals, and continuing to recruit doctors to improve the breadth and depth of specialty services.

Michigan State is committed to pediatric care in this community, and we believe excellence can best be accomplished through integration of services with Sparrow. Expanding an already strong partnership will help us increase the significant depth of subspecialty pediatric care already in Lansing.
