Tragedy and compassion

I am deeply saddened by the need to acknowledge tragic events across the country this week. While they didn’t take place in our community, they have a profound impact on many in our Spartan family. As members of our community experience and express the pain, anger, and confusion caused by these events, we must have care and concern for all.

Members of communities that feel especially vulnerable as a result of these recent tragedies, including African American and law enforcement communities, need our compassion and support. In times like these, we must take time to listen to one another, to provide support, and to extend patience and understanding.

As members of the Spartan family, this is what we do and what we stand for. We condemn violence in all forms and reaffirm our respect for differences and varying viewpoints. As a community struggling with our responses to these events—events that by their nature can be forces of division and disunity—we believe in the power of Spartans standing together to look after one another.
