Carol Morey Viventi
Vice President and Special Counsel to the President

Carol ViventiViventi was deputy director of the Michigan Department of Civil Rights, overseeing community engagement, communications and strategic operations. As the first woman and ethnic minority to serve as secretary of the Michigan Senate, Viventi oversaw sexual harassment policy and training for senators and staff members and was responsible for leading the operation of the 75-member staff. She was also legal counsel to the non-partisan Joint Committee on Administrative Rules and was deputy chief of staff and counsel to the cabinet for Gov. Engler.

Viventi received her bachelor of arts in divisional social science from Michigan State University and earned her law degree from Thomas M. Cooley Law School. She served as an adjunct professor at Western Michigan University and on the Board of Governors of the Japanese American National Museum.

As chief of staff, Zeig supports the president in advancing the mission and interests of the university and in implementing the president’s vision, initiatives, and objectives. He serves as an advisor to the president on major issues and policies and is a key liaison with vice presidents, executive managers, and other stakeholders across campus. Additionally, he supervises the president’s office staff and provides oversight for administrative functions.

Zeig joined MSU in 2012 and before his current appointment in September 2018, held positions in the Office of Planning and Budgets and president’s office. Prior to joining MSU, Zeig worked at Central Michigan University and in the administration of Gov. Jennifer M. Granholm in the education policy and external affairs divisions. As part of his scholarly work, he has been published nationally in journals including Innovative Higher Education and Change, as well as other publications such as Trusteeship and Inside Higher Ed. He has also taught legal issues in higher education as an adjunct professor in the Department of Educational Leadership at CMU.

Zeig has a bachelor’s degree in political science from CMU as well as master’s and doctoral degrees in higher education administration from MSU. During his doctoral program, Zeig received numerous fellowships and awards including the Erickson Research Fellowship, Erickson Memorial Fellowship, James A. Wilson Fellowship, and Margaret F. Lorimer Fellowship.
