Monday, Dec. 17 was a historic day for Michigan State University. Leaders from MSU and McLaren Health Care gathered to break ground for a major new investment in community health care. McLaren will build a state-of-the-art, $450 million hospital on property purchased from the MSU Foundation in the University Corporate Research Park near Collins Road. Read more

This week I appointed Marilyn Tarrant, who has been the director of our Office of Internal Audit, to be associate vice president in charge of the newly organized Office of Audit, Risk, and Compliance. The new office brings together MSU's oversight of ethics, risk, and compliance with our internal audit functions into one office. Read more

I was in Washington, D.C. on Tuesday to testify before the Senate subcommittee that has been holding hearings focused on protecting amateur athletes in the wake of the Nassar case. It was an excellent opportunity to talk about the things we’ve been doing at Michigan State and put into the Senate report all the specific steps already taken to enhance safety and accountability on campus. Since I arrived on campus, completing a prompt and successful mediation of the Nassar litigation has been a top priority for the university and for me. That is why we were pleased yesterday to announce that attorneys representing 332 survivors in lawsuits against MSU and attorneys for the university reached an agreement in principle to a $500 million global settlement. I was shocked, and I am grieved, to learn about the gunfire deaths at Central Michigan University this morning. Mount Pleasant is my hometown and I know the impacts of this tragedy will afflict the entire community. I offer the deep sympathy of my family and the support of the entire Michigan State University community to our kin, our colleagues, and our friends in Mount Pleasant and at CMU. Read more
