Nov. 22, 2022: Thoughts for this season

Dear Spartan community:

Our lovely campus, like our academic season, is in transition. Winter weather arrived in force last week with wind-whipped snow making the entrances to our buildings places of warmth as we stomped our feet and exhaled warm breath.

Our students are writing papers and finishing experiments, and about 3,000 fall graduates — plus those who completed their degrees in the summer — are preparing for graduation ceremonies on Dec. 16 and 17. Transitions like these call for a warm coat, hot chocolate and a bit of Spartan smarts, determination and resilience.

As I reflect on this time in the seasonal and semester calendar, and on the recent transition in university leadership, I am immeasurably thankful for everything you bring to our collective purpose of creating knowledge and opportunity and preparing individuals, families and communities to thrive in the dynamic world we all share. I recorded a short video that expresses my gratitude for the journey we now share in this season of transition.

My best,
