The Michigan State University Annual Security and Fire Safety Report is now available at https://go.msu.edu/asfsr. This report is required by federal law and contains valuable information concerning safety and security at MSU. We hope you take the time to read it. At MSU, we are all committed to making our campus a safe and secure place to live, work, and learn. Anyone who becomes aware of a crime on property owned or controlled by MSU should report it to the MSU Department of Police and Public Safety (MSU DPPS).
The report has crime statistics for the three previous calendar years concerning reported crimes that occurred on campus; in certain off-campus buildings or property owned or controlled by MSU; and on public property within, or immediately adjacent to and accessible from, the campus. The report includes information for all separate MSU campuses including East Lansing, College of Human Medicine in Grand Rapids, College of Osteopathic Medicine in Detroit and Macomb, and the MSU Eli Broad College of Business in Troy.
The report describes the MSU Department of Police and Public Safety services and policies, and explains where and how to report crimes, fires, and medical emergencies on and off campus. It includes information on crime prevention and victim support services, as well as on-campus and university student housing security. The report also provides information about the university’s emergency response and evacuation procedures in the event a significant emergency or dangerous situation occurs on campus. All members of the MSU community are encouraged to report to the MSU Department of Police and Public Safety any event or incident that involves a significant emergency or dangerous situation that may pose an immediate or ongoing threat to the health or safety of students or employees on campus by calling 911.
The university maintains a daily crime and fire log detailing the nature, date, time, general location, and disposition if known, of each incident that occurs on campus. This log is discussed, and linked to, in the report.
In compliance with campus safety requirements, the report also provides information on campus fire safety practices and standards. Specifically, the report contains fire statistics for each on-campus student housing facility, a description of the fire safety system in each facility, procedures on student housing evacuation and policies for fire safety education and training programs, among other items.
In accordance with the Stop Campus Hazing Act, which became law in December 2024, information related to hazing—including policies, reporting options, adjudicating incidents, and education—is included in the report. All students, faculty and staff are strongly encouraged to participate in MSU’s hazing prevention programming. For more information about hazing, reporting options, frequently asked questions, and instructions on accessing prevention programming opportunities, visit stophazing.msu.edu.
The report describes the MSU Relationship Violence and Sexual Misconduct and Title IX Policy. The policy defines prohibited behavior, the consequences of engaging in prohibited behavior, and explains how to file a complaint about relationship violence, stalking, and sexual misconduct. The report describes procedures to follow when relationship violence or sexual misconduct occurs, including the MSU Department of Police and Public Safety process and the university’s investigation process. It also describes confidential resources on campus such as the Center for Survivors and its emergency shelter on campus called Safe Place. Campus programs aimed to prevent relationship violence and sexual misconduct are also described in the report.
As a reminder, Title IX prohibits retaliation against reporters of sex discrimination, including reports of sex discrimination against administrators and other employees. MSU will independently investigate alleged retaliation for participation in the Title IX process.
The report also provides information about alcohol and other drugs policies, legal and conduct-related consequences of illegal substance use, the health effects of such use, and available support services.
We hope this information will be helpful to you. MSU will provide a paper copy of the report upon request. If you would like a paper copy of the report or if you encounter a barrier to accessibility, please contact the MSU Clery Team at (517) 353-2620 or email clery@msu.edu.
