Condemning Antisemitic Vandalism

To the MSU community:

In the wake of unspeakable violence committed against the Jewish community in Australia, I was deeply troubled to learn of multiple incidents of antisemitism near our own campus in the form of vandalism against the university community’s Chabad Jewish Center. That this occurred during Hanukkah — a time centered on light, resilience and faith — only deepens the pain and concern felt by many.

Thankfully, no one was physically harmed by these acts. However, the intent was clear, and the impact is palpable. For many students, faculty, staff and families, Chabad serves as a home away from home — a place of worship, community and cultural connection. Acts such as these reverberate far beyond physical damage, especially for members of the Jewish community who continue to live with the heightened reality of antisemitism.

Michigan State University is a community for all. We unequivocally condemn antisemitism in all its forms, as well as hatred, harassment and violence directed at any individual or group. Any member of our community with safety concerns should contact the MSU Department of Police and Public Safety. The DPPS will offer its support and assistance to the East Lansing Police Department in identifying and holding accountable those who perpetrated these hateful crimes.

I recognize that incidents like this can be deeply distressing for members of our community, and no one should feel they have to navigate that impact alone. Support is available, and I encourage anyone who might need it to reach out to MSU’s Counseling and Psychiatric Services and our Employee Assistance Program for support. Additionally, members of our community may report concerns through our Office for Civil Rights and Title IX Education and Compliance

MSU will continue to work in partnership with community leaders to foster an environment grounded in dignity, respect and safety — especially during moments that test our shared values. As we reflect during this season of light, we reaffirm our commitment to countering hate and supporting one another as Spartans.
