A message to the Spartan Community about Berkey Hall

Dear Spartans,

Earlier today, Michigan State University responded to a public safety situation involving Berkey Hall. Thanks to the swift and coordinated efforts of the Michigan State University Department of Police and Public Safety and other law enforcement partners, the situation was resolved quickly and safely.

I want to express my sincere appreciation to everyone who acted with urgency, professionalism and care to resolve this situation – from law enforcement officials to the Provost's Office, Registrar's Office, College of Social Science Dean, leaders and employees within Berkey Hall. Their dedication to ensuring a safe working and learning environment is deeply appreciated.

I also want to thank our students, faculty and staff for following guidance, adjusting quickly and remaining flexible throughout the day. I realize this isn’t ideal, especially during the first week of class when many are getting their bearings and adjusting to campus life. But safety will always come first.

Events like this and the uncertainty created by them can be unsettling, particularly for those who continue to carry memories of past incidents. Please remember there are campus resources to support you, through MSU Counseling and Psychological Services and the Employee Assistance Program. We remain committed to caring for one another.

The safety and well-being of our community will always be our highest priority. We will continue to share information as appropriate and remain focused on providing a safe environment to learn, work and live.

Thank you for your patience, cooperation and commitment to one another.

Sincerely,

Kevin M. Guskiewicz, Ph.D.
President
Michigan State University
