All students and employees
Dear Spartans,
Following a week of intensive work, our East Lansing campus has resumed normal operations after the Sept. 19 power outage disrupted steam heat and hot water service to much of campus.
Power and steam service were fully restored to all affected facilities as of Monday, Sept. 28. Given the scale of our campus with more than 19 million gross square feet of building space and 16 miles of steam tunnels, this was a significant undertaking, and I am grateful for the patience and flexibility of our students, faculty and staff throughout the restoration process. We will continue to monitor facilities for any additional repairs related to water intrusion or other system impacts.
I know that going without hot water was an inconvenience for many members of our community. Updates, support resources and information on reporting impacts remain available on our dedicated webpage.
With restoration completed, we will now turn more fully to assessing the causes of the outage and lessons learned.
I am especially grateful to our Infrastructure Planning and Facilities teams for their extraordinary work, to Residential and Hospitality Services for supporting affected students throughout the disruption and to faculty and academic units for quickly adapting classes and minimizing impacts on students. I want to give special thanks to the many others in our university community who stepped up to offer their support.
Once again, Spartans came together in challenging circumstances, and I could not be prouder of this community.
Spartans Will!
