May 31, 2019: Letter to the Community

Greetings MSU community,

Thank you to the entire Spartan family for the warm and wonderful welcome as I accepted the honor of being selected Michigan State University’s 21st president.

As I prepared to leave campus yesterday to return to Stony Brook University after my visit this week, I had a few minutes to reflect on the past three days, which have been incredible. My schedule was packed with opportunities to meet and speak with several hundred members of the MSU family. The thousands of emails, tweets and online comments I’ve received already have been extraordinary. I cannot wait to return to campus Aug. 1 to begin my official role as your new leader.

During my visit, I spoke with hundreds of individuals and met with more than a dozen groups, including students, faculty, staff, deans, administrators, alumni, donors, policymakers, government and business leaders and other friends of MSU. Many Spartans shared their passion for this university and their hope we can go forward in ways that advance healing and inspire new levels of excellence and inclusion. I look forward to getting to work and to meeting many more of you in the coming months.

I particularly want to thank you for your kindness toward my family. Ellen and three of our four children were here on campus for the board meeting, and they all remarked on the very special spirit they felt while on this beautiful campus. The extraordinary people who call themselves Spartans represent one of the primary reasons coming to MSU was so appealing to me. I am happy and grateful my family was able to experience this firsthand.

Finally, I want to thank the Presidential Search Committee and the Board of Trustees for entrusting me with this important role. I commit to you I will work tirelessly to be the leader MSU needs and deserves at this time in our history.

I look forward to taking this journey together.

Go Green!

Sincerely,
Samuel L. Stanley Jr., M.D.
