Aug. 1, 2019: Message to faculty and staff

Dear MSU colleague,

It’s a busy time with preparations for the new academic year nearing completion, but I wanted to drop a quick note to introduce myself and tell you how pleased I am to be here.

Effective Aug. 1, I have become Michigan State’s 21st president. I’m a physician and researcher, and for those who may be curious about my credentials and background, I invite you to review my biography and CV as well as the biography of my spouse, Ellen Li, on the presidential website.

Cowles House will be our home when it is ready for occupancy early next year. In the meantime, from my temporary location on campus, I plan to walk to the office whenever I can. Please feel free to say hello and introduce yourself when our paths cross. I plan to be a familiar presence and an active member of the MSU community.

Many have asked me why I accepted the position, and it is in large part because I believe MSU is an extraordinary institution. That is a credit to the talent and dedication of our fellow employees, students and alumni. I am impressed by the global impact of MSU’s research and partnerships and the passion so many Spartans have for this university. I look forward to seeing how pride in MSU’s 160-year legacy of service to society is reflected and advanced here every day.

I also want to assure you that I plan to work with you to make this a place of awareness, respect and safety for all.

Executive Vice President for Administration Satish Udpa deserves our collective thanks for his principled stewardship of the university these last several months as acting president.

Finally, I will be sharing more about my plans and priorities in the days ahead. Today, let me just conclude by saying I am honored to be a fellow Spartan.

Go Green!

Samuel L. Stanley Jr., M.D.
