Sept. 6, 2019: Provost search update

Dear MSU students, faculty and staff,

Following the resignation of the provost yesterday, I want to let the campus community know I will appoint an interim provost in the coming days. If there are nominations for the interim role, those may be forwarded to

For those less familiar with the role of a university provost, this position has responsibility for overseeing and advancing the academic mission of the university. All college deans at MSU, among many other key staff members, report to that position. In the coming month, I will establish a committee to conduct a national search for a new MSU provost. This is a critical position, and it is my goal to find someone who shares our priorities for student success and campus safety and diversity, as well as our commitment to the pursuit of academic excellence and world-changing research. I am confident we will attract top candidates for this position.

You also might have read or heard about the bomb threat to the Hannah Administration Building, which was received earlier today after the Board of Trustees meeting concluded. I am thankful everyone was able to evacuate the building safely and promptly, and I am grateful to the MSU Police Department for effectively handling the situation. As I write this, we have returned to our offices. No one was injured, and no other campus buildings were affected. MSU police are investigating the threat and will provide updates when appropriate.

Thank you.

Samuel L. Stanley Jr., M.D.
