Sept. 16, 2020: Extending appointment of VP Marti Heil

Dear Colleagues,

I am pleased to share that I am extending the appointment of Vice President for University Advancement Marti Heil, whose original term at MSU ends next month. She now will serve on an at-will continuing basis like other executive managers at the university.

After a career exceeding 40 years in advancement work, Marti came out of retirement to lead University Advancement’s transition between capital campaigns and has agreed to my request to continue to assist in positioning MSU for its next comprehensive campaign, draft the next campaign plan, onboard new University Advancement leaders and continue to work with me on focused donor interactions.

Since I began my tenure as president, Marti has been a tremendous asset to me and to MSU at large. As part of my transition, Marti and her team arranged large donor and alumni group welcome events across Michigan and the country, plus approximately 75 one-on-one meetings with major donors. Prior to my arrival, Marti led the university to its most successful fundraising year in the institution’s history, raising more than $272.6 million in gifts and pledges during the 2018-19 fiscal year. It is particularly impressive that this record-breaking year occurred following the conclusion of the Empower Extraordinary capital campaign, a time when many institutions experience a dip in fundraising activity.

Marti is a strong administrator and leader of the University Advancement team. MSU recently contracted with the Marts & Lundy fundraising consulting firm for a comprehensive donor capacity and staffing analysis in preparation for our next capital campaign. This analysis helped identify the potential “next generation of prospects” that MSU must build relationships with to fill the pipeline of major donors in order to be successful in the next comprehensive campaign. Marti also restructured the office’s executive leadership team to better prepare us for the next campaign. She successfully recruited strong external advancement professionals to MSU, including those with experience at Ohio State University, Stanford University and the University of Colorado — a testament to MSU’s national stature.

I look forward to working with Marti, the entire advancement team and stakeholders across the university to continue to build relationships with alumni, donors and friends of MSU who can enrich our future and prepare us for the next comprehensive campaign.
