Secretary of the Board of Trustees Nakia White Barr has informed me that she accepted a position as assistant vice president in the Office of the President at Princeton University and will be returning to her home state of New Jersey. Her last day at Michigan State University will be Aug. 20.
Nakia joined MSU in 2014 as assistant general counsel, focusing on commercial transactions, governance and government relations. She also served as an adjunct professor in the MSU College of Law, teaching contract drafting. She assumed the role of secretary of the Board of Trustees in 2018.
During her time in this role, Nakia has made significant contributions to the effective governance of the university, including supporting numerous leadership transitions. As secretary of the Board of Trustees, she served as the primary liaison to the Board of Trustees, provided administrative and legal support for the board, and assisted with strategic initiatives and special projects. In addition to her legal and governance work, she served on numerous university committees, including the Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Steering Committee which developed the university’s first campus-wide DEI plan. Nakia also served as chair of the University Naming Committee.
Nakia graduated summa cum laude from the University of Maryland at College Park with a degree in government and politics and a certificate in African American studies. She earned her Juris Doctorate from Harvard Law School.
Please join me in congratulating Nakia on her new role and thanking her for seven years of dedicated service to MSU.
